What is a dental or tooth crown?
A dental crown is essentially a full tooth covering used to cosmetically fix a damaged or aesthetically displeasing tooth.
What materials can dental crowns be made of?
There are primarily three types of crowns used today: gold, porcelain, or a mix of porcelain and metal.
What dental conditions or cosmetic problems can crowns fix?
crowns are used to cover and/or treat (in combination with other restorative procedures) teeth that are gapped, chipped, discolored, misshapen or otherwise damaged.
What are the important differences between each crown type?
Of the materials used, gold crowns are the strongest and the most simple to install, but they are also the most visible. Porcelain and metal mixed crowns are the next strongest, but they also become visible around the gum line over time. Porcelain crowns are the most desirable and natural looking, but they are slightly less strong than the other options.
