The first step in treatment is scheduling an initial consultation. During this appointment you can describe the symptoms you are feeling to Dr. Varipapa and will examine the specific features of your teeth, mouth and bite. The information gathered in this appointment will enable Dr. Viapapa to diagnose your condition and decide the best treatment options available to you.

Generally treatment of TMJ will involve identifying the most comfortable or natural position for your jaw and bite. To achieve this positioning, orthotics (or bite positioners) can be used. These allow your jaw to rest in a comfortable position and eliminate the muscle tension behind your symptoms. Once your orthotic is honed and adjusted to achieve maximum comfort, permanent dental work can be done to relieve you of your symptoms.

In addition to an orthotic, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation can be used to temporarily relieve you of TMJ/TMD symptoms. This entails using electrodes that override the pain message your nervous system sends to the brain. Dr. Varipapa can discuss this treatment with you in more detail during your initial consultation.
